In 1948, Bernice and John McMurrough purchased what is known today as the McMurrough Funeral Chapel. In 1955, they added an addition to the chapel, making it the largest chapel in west Lake County at the time. In 1965, the building nearly doubled in square footage with another addition, bringing McMurrough Funeral Chapel to its current size.

In 1978, John McMurrough passed on and his son, Mark, took over the operations of the funeral home. Over the years, Mark has put a lot of effort into maintaining both the exterior and interior of the chapel by cultivating the grounds and keeping the furnishings up to date.

Today, McMurrough Funeral Chapel is a cornerstone of Libertyville history.
