Obituary of Robert "Bruce" and Divina Thomson (nee Spina)

Please share a memory of Robert "Bruce" and Divina to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert “Bruce” and Divina C. (nee Spina) Thomson memorial celebration will be held Friday July 10th at 7:00 pm at McMurrough Funeral Chapel, 101 Park Pl (Rt 176, 1 Block East of Milwaukee Ave) Libertyville. Family will receive friends from 5:00 – 9:00 pm at the McMurrough Chapel. Some history, in 1935 Divina’s family opened Spina’s (Italian restaurant in Mundelein), and later the Thomson family relocated to Mundelein. Bruce’s father, James Alexander Thomson, designed and built a lavish house in Towner’s subdivision. Bruce met Divina while frequenting her family’s restaurant while the Thomson men built their family house. Bruce and Divina began dating and shortly thereafter Bruce moved in with Divina’s family to help her parents through illness. Bruce and Divina married in 1957 just before Bruce enlisted to serve his country in the US Army during peacetime in Germany. He rose to the rank of Corporal in a Tank Unit. Upon returning from service in 1959, Bruce joined his brother Dick as a volunteer for the Countryside Fire Protection District. In 1966, Bruce and Divina welcomed the birth of their only son James Alexander Thomson II. Over the years, Spina’s Restaurant became Spina’s Logcabin. Spina’s was a fixture of the community throughout the years and throughout its many changes from restaurant to tavern to grocer liquor store. Bruce, Divina and Jim ran the business together as a family. Their son James will hold a service telling joyful stories about his parents and about his life growing up in the business. He invites you to come out and share your memories and anecdotes to celebrate their lives. Please dress casually, no formal attire required. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Marytown, Libertyville (where Divina would go for comfort after Bruce passed away) would be greatly appreciated. Funeral information (847) 362-2626.
