Obituary of Janice Krozel Schulien

Janice K. Schulien, 72, of Mundelein and former longtime resident of Libertyville, died from cancer on November 12, 2015 with family at her side. Born December 23, 1942 in Chicago, she graduated from Loyola University-Chicago where she met John, her husband of 43 years. She earned a PhD in microbiology from the University of Illinois in 1969. With her husband serving in the U.S. Army, they were stationed in Germany for three years, an experience she greatly cherished. She worked several years as a bacteriologist before raising seven children as a homemaker. Deeply committed to her Catholic faith, Janice discerned a vocation in Carmel and was professed as a Third Order Carmelite in July 1997. She was a consistent life-long learner in the St. Joseph Lay Carmelite Community. In 1998 she completed a Master of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University-Chicago and began providing spiritual direction through the Institute of Diaconate Studies at Mundelein Seminary a few years later. She earned a Master of Professional Counseling in 2003 from National-Louis University and worked as an addictions counselor for several years. Janice was a voracious book-reader, who enjoyed working sudoku puzzles, gardening, listening to varied music, and appreciating art and architecture. Janice is survived by her children: John (Heather) Schulien, Rita (James) MacAyeal, Keith Schulien, Ruth Schulien, Valerie (Alex) Terray and Karen (Wayne) Saxe; grandchildren: Teresa, Daniel, Sophia, Madison, Eliza, and Adele; and her sister Loretta Delaney. She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Anna Krozel, her husband John Schulien, and her daughter Rachel Balmer. Funeral Mass for Janice will be Monday November 23 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 121 E Maple Ave, Libertyville. Visitation will be Sunday Nov 22nd from 2:00 - 6:00 pm at McMurrough Funeral Chapel, 101 Park Place, (Rt 176, 1 Block East of Milwaukee Ave) Libertyville. Interment Ascension Cemetery Libertyville.
